The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
