The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
